Model for a Civilization VI mod adding Notre-Dame into the game. Model was largely modeled in Blender and textured in Substance Painter.

I largely followed diagrams (plan and elevation) I found online to help model the cathedral and get the overall proportions right. However I did have to make adjustments to make it fit within the game. Notably, the cathedral is shorter than to ought to be to allow it to fit properly within the tile. A slight taper was applied to the bell towers and the transepts to enhance the appearance of height and to match the overall stylised look of the game.

A mask for the windows were baked on to a texture using the appropriate UV channels, then used to generate the emissive map and stained glass windows in Substance Designer.

Scaffolding for the construction animation was generated using my Scaffolding Generator in Houdini. Animation and rigging was also done procedurally in Houdini, using the same tools and method as I explained in this blog. The order in which the Notre-Dame is built in the game is somewhat faithful to how it was historically built, with the apse/choir completed first to allow for services while the rest of the cathedral continued to be under construction.
